Answer
What is the NEO Dachshund Picnic
The North East Ohio Dachshund Picnic is a yearly event that started in 1998. The picnic is held on the second Saturday of July. The venue for the the picnic has changed over the years. The first picnic took place in a back yard in North Royalton, the second picnic was in a park in Canton and the third and fourth took place at Hardesty Park in Akron. The picnics since then have been held at Plum Creek Park in Kent, Ohio.
The Picnic is a gathering of Dachshund owners, lovers and anyone interested in the breed. It is a social gathering where people and dogs meet. The size of the picnic has steadily grown from the 15-20 dogs at the first to over 600 in the last few years.
If you are interested in dachshunds - this is the place to be - you will see all sizes, coats and colors.
The earlier picnics supplied hot dogs and people brought side dishes. This no longer is the case. Dachshund Rescue groups now sell hot dogs and other food with the proceeds going to Dacshund Rescue.
We ask anyone attending to bring a bag of dry dog food as a donation. This food is donated to the Portage County Animal Shelter. We are proud to say that the food that is donated keeps the shelter's dogs fed for quite a while.
Who puts on the NEO Dacshund Picnic
The Dachsie Crew!
These folks spend a lot of time planning, organizing and executing the picnic every year. Some of the Dachsie Crew have been present at ALL of the picnics.
The Dachsie Crew consists of: Susan, Karen, Roxanne, Brian and Tom.
If you run into them at the picnic, stop and say hello!
Where is the next picnic going to be held?
This information will always be on the home page of this website. We hope to always have the picnic on the same day - the 2nd Saturday in July. The venue may change. So please watch this site. The announcement will be there when the venue is known.
Are other breeds welcome to the Dachshund Picnic?
We gladly welcome other members of your family - no matter what the breed is. The only requirement for being declared "Dachshund for the Day" is that they are well mannered and get along with other dogs.
What should I bring to the picnic?
Since the picnic takes place in July, it gets HOT, so one of the most important things is WATER for your dogs and some kind of a bowl for them to drink from.
A bag of dry dog food for a donation - this is given to the local Animal Shelter.
What are the rules of the picnic?
1 - ABSOLUTELY NO DOGS OR PUPPYS ARE TO BE SOLD AT THE PICNIC. IF YOU ARE CAUGHT YOU WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE! NO EXCEPTIONS!
2 - All dogs must be on a leash or in a pen at all times.
3 - Be careful! Not all dogs react the same to strange people.
4 - Pick up after your dog(s). There are plastic bags scattered around the picnic site for picking up after your dogs.
HI, NEW HERE, I DONT SEE WHERE YOU GIVE AN OVERVIEW OF EXACTLY GOES ON AT THESE PICNICS, AN WHAT IT ALL CONSIST OF...DO WE BRING OUR OWN PICNIC WITH US, WHAT DOES IT COST IF ANYTHING?THANK YOU ...CYNDI
This is a social gathering of dachshund lovers. There are all types of people that come just for the love of the breed and to meet others that have the same feelings. You will see all colors and coats of dachshunds here. There is usually a costume contest and some awards for dachshunds that have traveled the farthest, are the oldest, the longest, etc.
Feel free to bring your own picnic if you wish. Historically, in the early days, the Dachshund crew cooked hot dogs and people brought side dishes to share, but the picnic has grown to such a large size this became unmanagable. The current food situation is that a rescue group will cook hotdogs and the proceeds go toward rescue. A different rescue organization makes the hotdogs each year.
As of the 2006 picnic there is a minimal cost of $1.00 per dachsie. This is to cover the cost of park rental and overhead running the picnic.
We also would appreciate if every family donated a bag of dry dog food for the Portage County Dog Warden. People have been very generous in the past.
